The Woodentops 3-CD retrospective ‘Before During After: Remasters, Remixes & Rarities 1982-1992’ is out now.
Although they made only two full albums during their existence, The Woodentops were briefly pivotal in the fast changing late 80s music scene, the adoption of their song ‘Why Why Why’ by Ibiza’s nascent Balearic scene in 1987 neatly encapsulated a moment when indie rock and dance music crossed over one another. Until that point, with the exceptions of New Order and the yet-to-explode Happy Mondays, the two worlds had been rigorously and separately defined, ‘Why Why Why’ becoming an avatar of the coming indie-dance crossover. They are still remembered by a generation of musicians and DJs – not least huge fans David Bowie, Morrissey and Noel Gallagher.
Split across 3 CDs in a fold out sleeve, Before During After marks the definitive Woodentops retrospective. CDs 1 & 2 feature their two albums ‘Giant’ and ‘Wooden Foot Cops on the Highway’ re-mastered from the original tapes as well as rare, unreleased material while CD3 collates alternate and remixed versions. The package also includes Rolo’s new in-depth commentary to accompany the track lists.
“Anyone sane living in this world will realise on hearing ‘Plenty’ that The Woodentops bring with them a new age of enlightenment”
“The Woodentops are a revelation. They open the door to magic and mystery in music. They are everything pop should be.”
Melody Maker, 1986
“It sounded so unique, so different. I couldn’t believe they were playing this mad record by an English indie band as their last record of the night. The whole place went off.”
The Woodentops play Dingwalls in London on June 23rd.
