Kathryn Williams new album ‘Hypoxia’ is out now!

15 Jun 2015

Kathryn Williams’s latest album ‘Hypoxia’ is out today, along with the video for the single ‘Mirrors’.

The ‘Hypoxia’ project’s origins came in 2013 when Kathryn received a call from New Writing North asking if she would accept an open commission to write material inspired by Plath’s work for the Durham Book Festival’s celebration of her life and work last year, commemorating the 50th Anniversary of The Bell Jar’s publication and her death. Kathryn began what was to be a revelatory re-reading of The Bell Jar (which she hadn’t read since her teens): “What I wasn’t prepared for was the muscular writing. The shocking, brutal honesty. The modernness. Thinking about a woman writing like this 50 years ago was astounding.”

Kathryn says of the first single ‘Mirrors’: “The song came from the scene where Esther goes into a lift and sees her reflection but doesn’t recognise it. This is the first moment of dread I felt as a reader.  Mirrors are a reoccurring theme in the book - I love the idea of mirrors as a window to nowhere.” Musically the dramatic glam rock guitars that suddenly erupt in the song will surprise, as will Kathryn’s deliciously idiosyncratic lyrics & delivery – her gentle voice loaded with an underlying edge and steeliness that has always been there but never seemed more apposite.
