An unusual combination of a clarinet (Áslaug Rún Magnúsdóttir), electronics (Þórður Kári Steinþórsson) and Jófríður Ákadóttir’s distinctive vocal, Samaris are ‘Unlike much else you’ll hear coming out of Iceland right now.’ (The Line Of Best Fit)
‘Samaris specialise in gorgeous, haunting nocturnes’
(Drowned In Sound)
Still in their teens, Samaris combine downtempo electronica and bold, percussive beats with haunting chant-like vocals - the lyrics culled from nineteenth century Icelandic poems. The result is simultaneously ancient and modern – an ethereal sound filled with dark spaces and alien atmosphere.
Formed in January 2011, within months they had won both the Icelandic Músíktilraunir (past winners include the likes of Of Monsters and Men) and Kraumur Awards.
Their first UK release and eponymously-titled album will arrive summer 2013, compiling their 2 Icelandic-released EPs with 4 additional remixes. A brand new album follows in the autumn.
