Born in Liverpool, singer-songwriter John Cunningham attended university in Brighton, where he fell into the city’s thriving indie scene. Although now based in the North of England, it was here that kickstarted his career when a demo tape brought him to the attention of ex-Housemartins guitarist Stan Cullimore. He produced Cunningham’s debut EP ‘Backward Steps’, which was then released in 1989. His first full-length record ‘Shankly Gates’ was released in 1993, with another four LPs following over the next 9 years. In 2002, OLI reissued his last 2 albums ‘Homeless Home’ and ‘Happy-Go-Unlucky’ together in one package.
