Monsta: dysfunctional pop for kids who want Black Sabbath but were raised on Britney

MONSTA is a music project. Gaato is a production company. Gaato put Monsta together from the most talented dysfunctional people they could find.

“We make it possible for these brilliant rock and rollers, who could never hold it together on their own, to actually get something done. We’re a bit like a social services charity - except we can’t get the gov to give us any money,” says Gaato’s David Turin.

LAURA FOLLIN (vocals): Born in St. Helens, Lancashire, Laura (22) is a complete Chav. She is also a complete Savant. Chav Savant! She’s got the brain of a Top Shop girl, the vocals of Janis Joplin and the soul of a poet laura-eate. Since she was 14, Laura had attracted the attention of local producers, all of whom were wooed by her incomparable vocals, but eventually found her too difficult to deal with. Enter David Turin, who used her as a session singer and was astounded by the violence and beauty that came out of her mouth. “It’s a constant struggle to deal with Laura,” says Turin, “but in the end, she’s rock and roll brilliant!”

GENTLEMAN JAMES WILSON (guitar): “I first saw Jim (21) at a rave deep in the woods near Haigh Hall and thought ‘I want that kid’...,” says Turin “...before I even knew that he was the best damn guitar slinger in Greater Manchester. He was tall and thin and pale with long black hair, halfnaked under a black leather jacket - a real Dum Dum Boy. It took me a while to get in touch with him, because he was literally living in the woods at that time, but once we jammed i knew I’d found the missing link. He comes from the school of all that tacky heavy metal playing, like Randy Rhoads, but he’s made it into an abstract art form. He gets the name ‘Gentleman Jim’ because even if his pupils are completely dilated and his head is extra-terrestrial, he maintains a calm gentlemanliness, opening doors for girls and assisting old people at bus stops and what not. I think he’ll go down in guitar history. “

EMMA STOCKTON (vocals): Emma (21) is the only “good” person in MONSTA. A quiet music student, Emma brings solidity and profound vocal technique to the project. “I initially brought her in because I was sick of dealing with Laura and I wanted her as a back up plan. As it turned out, she and Laura formed an odd bond and now they’re both against me!,” says Turin.

KATE GARNER is a well known photographer and ex-pop star whose band, Haysi Fantayzee, influenced a generation of 80s trendies. Her work as a photographer has seen her making indelible images of Sinead O’Connor, Bjork, PJ Harvey, and many others for magazines and albums. Kate works visuals and helps write songs for Gaato projects.

DAVID TURIN got his start in the music business working with Perry Farrell, Lollapalooza and Porno for Pyros. His first group, Banyan (Virgin/Higher Octave), consisted of the Dust Brothers, Money Mark, Mike Watt and Nils Cline. His first label, Peopletree, issued two electro-folk classics - “Milla Jovovich: the Peopletree Sessions” and “The Bouncy Castle.” David writes songs, makes sounds and does live electronics with MONSTA.
