Biography
The perfect antidote to modern life and all of its complications,
Britain’s urban storytellers are back….
Day One consists of vocalist Phelim Byrne and multi-instrumentalist
Matthew Hardwidge who met in Bristol in 1998. The duo began collaborating
in the mid-'90s, blending the storytelling traditions of hip-hop and
British folk along with a slew of musical influences, including jazz
and classic rock.
Day One signed to Massive Attack’s Melankolic label and later
One Little Indian, specialising in loping beats and a general feeling
of English alienation.
Their debut capitulated them to international success, and resulted
in sell-out shows across Europe. Notable appearances included The
Glastonbury Festival, Benicassim, T in the Park, and V Festival. They
were invited to join Muse and The Flaming Lips on their French Les
Inrocktible tour later in 2000.
Day One’s diversity is reflected in the TV and movie soundtracks
in which their music has featured, including: dark, teenage epic Cruel
Intentions, Emmy award-winning US series Six-Feet Under, and Trigger
Happy TV.
In Autumn 2007, Day One will release their long awaited new album
‘Probably Art’ on One Little Indian Records. The album
further develops every day themes from money hardships, friendship,
sex and intimacy through to loneliness. There are some surprises with
the tongue in cheek, post-modern parody in the album’s title
track “Probably Art” and an appearance from Black Eyed
Pea’s all-star Will. I. Am on “Give it to Me”.
